Food Friends Training on Feb 11
9:00am - 12:00pm
Preschool is when kids begin to develop lifelong habits – for better or worse. The Food Friends® are exciting in-school and at-home programs that get even the pickiest eaters to try new foods, and make a mighty move towards getting kids up and active! The Food Friends makes eating and being physically active fun for kids ages 3 to 5 years old.
The Food Friends® programs have been implemented across the nation, including Colorado. The Food Friends® Get Movin’ With Mighty Moves® was developed at Colorado State University (CSU) in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. Program messages and components have been thoroughly researched and tested. Mighty Moves is designed to promote physical activity and enhance gross motor development among preschool-aged children. Mighty Moves has shown significant increases in preschoolers’ gross motor skills and physical fitness when compared to a control group. The Food Friends program, through CSU, has developed materials and trainings available to family home child care providers. The Food Friends®: Fun With New Foods® and Get Movin’ With Mighty Moves® Training. The training is conducted by Julie Roach, MS, RD, a Food Friends Program Coordinator with CSU’s Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition (this is a 3-hour training for family child care providers where you will receive 1.5 hours in Nutrition and 1.5 hours in Child Growth and Development). In addition to signing up for the training, you are signing up/committing to implementing the 10-week Food Friends program in your family childcare home (receiving a free kit of materials valued at over $500 to do so). Program implementation at a glance:
• Developmentally appropriate for 3-5-year-olds; so you must serve some children in this age group to participate
• 10 weeks (you only need to attend the one 3-hour training; the program is implemented within your home)
• 4 activities per week; 2 nutrition and 2 physical activity (15-20 minutes each)
Attendees will leave with the tools they need to implement these nutrition and physical activity education programs designed to get 3-5-year-old children over picky eating and develop gross motor skills.
